Next presentation – Photography with smartphones

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 11th January at Scott School and we are thrilled that our speaker is Dr Tom Peck who will be talking to us on a fascinating topic…

The best camera is the one you have with you – your phone

In recent years we’ve seen dramatic developments in camera phone technology and the image quality has reached the point where they are used by some photographers to achieve accreditation with the Royal Photographic Society! Tom’s presentation will look at the types of photography that the mobile phone is ideal for – from portraiture to landscape, architecture, cityscapes and how to use the phone to ‘sketch’ before getting out the ‘proper camera’. All of these will be illustrated via a mix of Tom’s own photographs plus some of the leading mobile phone photographers in the world.

We’ve taken the decision to present this particular talk in the school hall because it will include plenty of audience participation which just wouldn’t work on Zoom. Covid is still a factor, of course, so we will be taking extra care to make the hall as safe as possible; extra ventilation, social distancing and, of course, don’t forget your mask.

In the second half of his presentation Tom will be showing us how he processes phone images and he has asked if we might send him some of our images taken with smart phones to use as examples during his talk. If you have an image from your phone that you would like to see being processed by Tom Peck send it to me at and I’ll forward it to him. He’ll only have time to process a few but you might be lucky.

We’ll aim to start at 7.30pm. This should be a really interesting presentation and we hope to see you there.
